International Health Insurance

Students participating in credit-bearing Georgetown international programs are required to have the Study Abroad Plan. Non-credit group participants may also be enrolled in the Study Abroad Plan depending on the specific program requirements, but typically are only required to be enrolled in health insurance which covers them overseas and which provides coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains.

Faculty and staff travelers whose international travel is university-related are expected to ensure they have adequate health insurance coverage independently.

Students

The Study Abroad Plan is provided by Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and enrollment is managed through the Student Health Insurance Office. The policy is designed to meet the special needs of international travelers. It provides coverage of up to $50,000 for illness or accident overseas, with no deductible. It also provides for emergency evacuation and family reunion (with pre-approval). Details of the coverage are available in the CISI brochure.

Cost

The Study Abroad Plan is billed on a trimester basis, and the cost is currently $60 per trimester (subject to change). The trimesters are: January 1 – April 30, May 1 – August 31, September 1 – December 31. If your travel falls within two trimesters, then the cost is $120. Your student account is charged for the appropriate amount based on your program dates.

Enrollment

Credit-bearing programs: Automatic when you register for the course/program.

Non-credit programs: Your program administrator or group leader will provide more information.

Seeking Treatment

CISI/Team Assist provides 24-hour emergency medical assistance. From outside the U.S., call CISI/Team Assist collect +1-312-935-1703. Within the U.S., call toll-free at 1-855-327-1411. Provide policy number GLM N06566066. CISI/Team Assist will provide special assistance in locating the nearest, most appropriate medical care. In the event of an emergency, CISI/Team Assist will provide translation services and referrals to local interpreters as necessary. If you are hospitalized, CISI/Team Assist may be able to coordinate hospital payment guarantees. Call CISI/Team Assist as soon as possible after you are admitted to the hospital to discuss payment options.

Filing for Reimbursement

The Study Abroad Plan provides coverage on a reimbursement basis. Therefore, students should be prepared to cover initial costs for medical treatments while abroad and then submit receipts to the insurance provider for reimbursement. Individual Students on University-Sponsored or Affiliated Travel

Individual student travelers whose international travel is university-sponsored or affiliated are required to ensure they have adequate health insurance coverage independently.  First confirm coverage for international travel with your primary health insurance provider. Remember to inquire about emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains.  If needed, purchase supplemental health insurance for the period of time you will be overseas. 

Faculty and Staff

If you are enrolled in one of the Georgetown health insurance plans you should check with the Office of Faculty and Staff Benefits about what international coverage is included in your policy. If you are enrolled in a non-university plan you should confirm coverage with that provider directly. Remember to inquire about emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. Should you need additional coverage for the time that you are traveling overseas, you choose one of the following options:

Cost

Currently $3.05 per day (subject to change). Payment by credit card or procard is possible through the CISI enrollment portal, and you will be able to download an enrollment letter with ID card and a consulate letter through this site should you need them.
